Steve Simpson gives us a step by step look at a recent project he illustrated for the Dublin Transport Office that is currently up around the city....
Steve: Brendan McNeely, Power Design, contacted me back in April this year. He'd produced a series of scamps working with the DTO [Dublin Transport Office] for a One Small Step poster campaign.

To get things rolling I produced a few very quick roughs based on Brendan's scamps:

Based on feedback from Brendan and the DTO I produced a cleaner second stage set of roughs:

As the client was really happy with these roughs I moved forward to produce the artwork in Photoshop. The initial plan was to make the background action monotone to aid readability.

However this didn't work as well as we had hoped, as the client felt it didn't emphasis the train enough.

To help this, I changed the background back to full colour, knocking it back a little using a layer of white set to 15%.

The final artwork was adapted for the rear of buses by the designer.
